Ratings of Psychological Suitability
(3 Rating Format)

Recommended

There are no indications of any disqualifying weakness or clearly contraindicated features. The personal history of the candidate is free of any signs of poor judgement, difficulty in adjusting to life, work, or in exercising responsibility. Accordingly, there is an absence of contraindicated factors. Additionally, there is the presence of adaptive features and a history that demonstrates initiative and effectiveness in dealing with others, requirements of their work and show adherence to the societal and legal standards of conduct. These are people who have been reliable and are highly likely to continue to be effective and responsible in performing the jobs that they seek.

Average scores, yet no indications of disqualifying weaknesses are evident. Often there are some experiences in the history that discount the profile, or scores that approach significance but are statistically within the normal range. Applicants who are simply marginal will be described as such. It is not unusual, however, for some questions to be raised by the assessment that the psychological data (alone) cannot completely resolve. All areas of potential concern are identified and the Department is encouraged to examine any information that may have been developed in the background investigation (and polygraph) that would be clarifying. Examples of behavior are discussed that would build confidence in the candidate, as well as issues that would further raise doubt. Sometimes test scores are effected because English is not the applicant's native language or there may be cultural issues or literacy concerns that effect the usefulness of test data. Additionally, some examinees are sufficiently anxious about their job search that they unintentionally reduce the value of their test results. Issues such as these are discussed when present, you will be told how much confidence there is in the data, and accordingly, what strength can be put in the recommendation.

Not Recommended

Contained in the test scores and/or clinical history is information that raises significant concern regarding features that are contraindicated for the work to be performed. Indications include valid test protocols that reveal indications of factors that involve behaviors or psychological characteristics that are in conflict with the psychological requirements of the position sought. Other signs may include perceptions, thoughts or behaviors that are, or have in the past, significantly undermined the candidate's reliability. Abnormal test scores that are not supported by a history or mental status on interview that verifies the concern should result in a tentative finding, pending discussion with the Department to ascertain if other information is available that clarifies the clinical picture. Abnormal test scores buttressed by a confirming clinical history and/or presentation can independently form a recommendation to disqualify. Likewise, any attempt to participate in the evaluation in other than with honest and full disclosure will result in a "not recommended" finding.
